​James Malewitz, PE began Performance Engineers in 1990 as a sole proprietorship. Jim brought in two partners, Chuck Stein, PE and Robert “Boomer” Bomier, PE a structural engineer, incorporating in 1998. For the next 16 years, these three partners built a strong presence in the Charlevoix community and began serving an expanding area in Northwest Michigan providing civil and structural engineering services.

 

In 2014, Aaron Nordman, PE became a partner after working at PEI since 2001. The business continued to diversify and grow over the years, adding contract sewer & water operations, materials testing, and a business segment focused on municipal services.  In 2020 PEI saw not only the changes due to the pandemic, but PEI unexpectedly lost our founder, James Malewitz.

 

PEI reorganized and Aaron assumed the role as President, Brad Muma, PE came on as a partner and Boomer retired. Committed to carrying on the core values that made PEI successful, Aaron has continued to diversify and grow the company over the past six years.  We have added geotechnical engineering services, expanded our materials testing capabilities, and in 2025 acquired Benchmark Engineering, Inc. The acquisition accomplished a key strategic goal to expand our surveying services and our geographic footprint across Northwest Michigan, now having offices in Charlevoix and Harbor Springs.
